Kristin Hapke

(Columbus, USA)

 

Kristin Hapke is a dancer, teacher, choreographer, who is currently pursuing her Master’s of Fine Arts in the Dance department at The Ohio State University. Her research investigates performance and its relationship to the body, informed by improvisation, dance/theater, and interactive technologies.

 

Kristin grew up performing in summer stock theatres and endless ballet Nutcrackers in Pa and attended the Minnesota Conservatory of Performing Arts High School. She received her BA in dance from the University of Oregon and her Laban Movement Analysis certification from the Integrated Movement Studies Program in Seattle. Her solo work has been produced and commissioned in Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Vancouver and Nanaimo, Canada. In May 2004, Tracking -most current group work, will be produced in New York by Dancespace in St. Mark’s Church and in June will be performed at the Kennedy Center, nominating her for The American College Dance Festival National Award for Best Choreographer. Hapke has taught dance technique, somatics, improvisation and Movement Analysis at The Ohio State University, Cornish College of the Arts, Velocity Contemporary Dance Studio and University of Washington as well as many festivals including The Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation.

In Seattle, she produced the Improvisational Series of classes and workshops, performed in ongoing improvisations and site specific work with Sil2k-Static Improv Lab., Lisa Nelson’s tuning score, BodyCartography, glassbones as well as many experimental, avant-garde musicians. For over ten years, Hapke has danced professionally with many companies including Mary Sheldon Scott Jarred Powell Performance, The Maureen Whiting Company and more recently with choreographers: Bebe Miller, Zvi Gottheiner, and Marlon Barrios-Solano.

The collaborations with Barrios combine dance improvisation with real-time interactive multimedia. The culmination of this research was recently presented for his MFA graduate performance of spiff/ unstablelandscapes V at the Advanced Computer Center of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio and will be presented this summer in Europe in Amsterdam and Poland. She is continually fascinated by interrelationship of performance, somatics, time, and the systems within the body and the states we live in.
