Paul Smith

Paul Verity Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Interactive Digital Media at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He was exposed to education in eight schools in three different languages in England and Switzerland. He took a BA degree in Photographic Arts from the the Polytechnic of Central London (Now University of Westminster and and MA in Interactive Multimedia at the London Institute. Originally a photographer, he has worked creating imagery to be used interactively by dancers, musicians and for site specific installations.
His work with dancers has been shown at the Tramway, Glasgow (2001), the ICA London (2001) and the Junction Cambridge (2002). He produced projections for "Homo @Habitat" an exhibition of British Design shown at the Teatro Adriano Rome (2001) and the Modern Art section of the National Museum in Prague (2002). Next month he will be performing at the Watershed Media Centre in Bristol having (with Martin Dupras) programmed FFT software in Director and PD in which Jazz Saxophonist Andy Sheppard will "play" video shot by Film Maker Barbara Hawkins. He is a member of the Interactive, Generative and Telematic Arts research group at UWE who will be starting a website for artists and academics to exchange ideas and methods of work. He is starting a Ph.D in this area in September.
